HORIZON IS OVER!

The webpage remains up as a permanent archive of game material, mainly for the benefit of nostalgic players - although if you'd like to run a Horizon-inspired game for your friends, that's wonderful too. Horizon will be succeeded by Legacyin Trinity term of 2006.

If you like you can look at the (sketchy, incomplete) GM notes as well.

The News

Turn 13

This news covers events from the 1st of Autumn's Dawn, 4022 HR, to the 25th of Autumn's Rise - the day of the Riverview meeting. In each section, stories are sorted in roughly chronological order, although in the case of the Grapevine it's hard to tell precisely when rumours begin, and it's rare that anything appearing in the Pamphlet Gallery is dated.

In the Papers

[OOC: All Liberator articles this turn are printed using the old-fashioned presses they were forced to use after their Greywriters broke down.]

PRIEST'S HOUSE BURNED, CHURCH CONDEMNS INDIVIDUALS WHO TARGET PRIESTS

(The Horizon Illuminator, 1st Autumn's Dawn 4022 HR.) ARSON today as a house in the Trade district burned to the ground. Set by PERSONS UNKNOWN, smoke was seen rising from the roof in the early hours of the morning by neighbours who quickly rallied round to try and extinguish the blaze. ALAS, the fire had taken a strong hold of the building and all they could do was prevent neighbouring houses from catching. The fire RAGED into the night and by morning all that was left were SMOKING RUINS. This newspaper has discovered the that house belonged to respected priest Stephan Isenkral! NO SURVIVORS were found from this TERRIBLE INFERNO but this paper has reason to believe through our investigations that in fact NO ONE was in the building at the time. His neighbours report that they hadn't seen Mr. Isenkral return home the previous evening, nor had he had any visitors. The Church has CONFIRMED that Father Isenkral has survived the attack, and has gone into hiding for his own safety.

The Church has CONDEMNED the actions of any who might have started the fire. Another local priest who knew Isenkral said "I don't know why anyone would want to hurt Stephen, he's never done anything to harm anyone. The Church has always remained neutral and avoided politics and gang warfare, merely seeking to help others. The day the Church becomes a target to those it has always served is a very sad day indeed."

Treasury Backs Down to Steam Union

(The Horizon Times, 2nd Autumn's Dawn 4022 HR.) Talks concluded yesterday between the Treasury, the Steam Union, and the management of the Central Steam Service with the Treasury caving in to all of the Steam Union's demands, forcing the Central Steam managers to restore employees' wages to their previous levels. The apparent strength of the Steam Union has proved controversial, the concerns of many being best expressed by Cornelius Dalcrow at a recent Prosperity campaign rally:

"We have here a situation where the Steam Union has stood up to the Treasury - which, let us recall, ultimately has authority over the management of Central Steam - and won. Let's not downplay the consequences of this. First off, this is going to embolden the Steam Union and their allies in the Horizon People's Party, and I assure you that they will become more and more ambitious, grasping, and greedy in their demands when they next decide to flex their muscle.

"Secondly, it poses difficult questions about the management of Central Steam. With the Treasury callously overruling the people - people they have employed - whose job it is to make sure that this institution is run in an efficient and cost-effective manner for the people of Horizon, one has to ask whether the managers of Central Steam have any power in their own factory. Are they empowered to make any decisions at all, difficult as they may be, to ensure the success of the Service? Or are their masters in the Treasury going to veto any proposal they consider to be a little too harsh on their comrade workers?"

Hess to Support Prosperity

(The Horizon Tribune, 4th Autumn's Dawn 4022 HR.) General Hess has today revealed her support for the Prosperity party founded by Lord Cornelious Dalcrow. Their firm traditionalist views have left some wondering if they are trying to drag Horizon backwards from its current position but its supporters have rebuffed these claims, saying that a stable and prosperous Horizon can only be achieved by slow and considered change rather than the haste with which many of the Mayor's policies were based. General Hess told us "Prosperity respects the people, all the people, and wants what is best for them. It wants to allow them to flourish and enjoy the benefits of their hard work. Prosperity stands for continued order in the City and maintaining the freedom the people have to work where they wish while keeping them safe from the many dangers in the world that might threaten them. Mayor Wright has shown that his policies cannot keep the people safe and as a result too many have died in wars, conflicts with the Powers and on the streets of Horizon itself."

When asked about the prospect of a parallel non-elected advisory council General Hess seemed broadly supportive. "Advice should never be refused as it can always be ignored if foolish and heeded if wise. The elected Goodly Chamber will be changing constantly each election and those in it may not have a grip of the full situation. The Mayor will also need advice from people who have had a chance to study the full picture and see the far reaching impact of what the local representatives of the Goodly chamber want."

Heroic Horse Guards Command Respect of Mob, al-Shiraz Saved From Extremists

(The Horizon Times, 12th Autumn's Dawn 4022 HR.) The Times is pleased to report a notable victory for Horizon, and the brave officers of the Hourse Guard. Confronted in the Trade District with a huge and disorderly mob, roaring for the blood of alchemists, the Horse Guard officers showed a united front and calmly but firmly demanded that the rioters disperse and go about what lawful business they might have. A simple but imposing display of gracefully wielded authority, in the opinion of this correspondent. Also, apparently, in the opinion of the rioters. For with those words, more than half of the mob immediately quietened down and dispersed, returning to their homes (mostly, unsurprisingly, in the Slums). A few even helped to restrain the hard core of protestors that remained. These fanatics made an attempt on the home of Lorenzo al-Shiraz, the noted Jurican clockworker, a disgusting show of "mob justice" in action. Fortunately, although momentarily taken aback by the new surge in violence, the Horse Guards were easily able to rout and apprehend the much reduced mob. Thus, another victory for the forces of civilization over those of destruction...

Hayes-Morton to Fund Steam Funfair Project

(The Horizon Tribune, 20th Autumn's Dawn 4022 HR.) Never let it be said that Mr Hayes-Morton of the Treasury is a stranger to fun. The public servant and private investor has established a Horizon Steam Fair Company, to finance and oversee the construction and operation of the world's first Steam-powered funfair; with the blueprints already prepared and a site being cleared, and steamworking talent being recruited rapidly, it looks as though the fair should open in time for Horizon's Day...

Cardinal of Cardinals Dies

(The Horizon Tribune, 22nd Autumn's Dawn 4022 HR.) The House of Withdrawn Cardinals, centre of the Church of the Intercessor, announced today the death of Cardinal Lucan XIII, Cardinal of Cardinals and spokesperson for the Church. As is the tradition for a Withdrawn Cardinal, Lucan's body has been burned rather than consumed by Ghoul; the smoke from the slow-burning pyre is still visible from the House's chimney, demonstrating that the Cardinals are still deliberating over their next leader.

[There follows a lengthy obituary of Lucan XIII].

Toll Booths Set Up at Entrances to Inner Horizon

(The Horizon Times, 24th Autumn's Dawn 4022 HR.) The Treasury announced today that following the discovery of "Inner Horizon", the network of hidden streets revealed by the Wall's vanishing, tollbooths were to be set up at the entrances. This, said sources at the Treasury, was to discourage "colonisation of what could potentially be a highly hazardous area". Inner Horizon, claims the Treasury, is unexplored territory in which it is easy to become disoriented or lost.

The new inhabitants of Inner Horizon have expressed disgust at this. Says father-of-four Milton Stokey: "Just when we find a place with no rent, no mob control, and some nice glass windows the taxman tells us that we have to pay a shilling each time we want to go home. It's daylight robbery, is what it is. Me and the family are all settled in our new house now, and apart from the way that the basement turns into a back alley it's dead cushy. Where'll we go now?"

BILKO'S GLAMOUROUS WEDDING

(The Horizon Illuminator, 1st Autumn's Rise 4022 HR.) Sergeant Bilko and Jennifer Hess, daughter of Mariana “THE HOUND” Hess, finally tied the knot this week in one of the most EXTRAVAGANT weddings we have seen all year. This reporter, who was lucky enough to be presnt at the ceremony, was STRUCK BY AWE at the arrangement of SUMPTUOUS OUTFITS and EXQUISTITE CUISINE. The actual ceremony itself was given the rather AVANTE GARDE theme of waterfalls, represented by jewelled fabrics and carefully chosen scented plants. Following on from this the guests moved on to the TWILIGHT-THEMED reception, where they were able to relax in the beautifully decorated surroundings. The HAPPY COUPLE were whisked away on their honeymoon in the beautiful Jurican countryside the following morning.

In other news, it seems that Heptarch Michael D’Avenant has also wed his lovely new bride this week.

Graded Alchemy Licences Unveiled

(The Town Crier, 3rd Autumn's Rise 4022 HR.) Let it hereby be known that the Treasury has revised the regulations on alchemy licences. Henceforth, the licence will be issued on a graded basis, with First Class licence holders being permitted to produce and sell essences of any level of purity, Second Class holders being able to produce and sell essences of up to and including a Fine level of purity, and Third Class alchemists being able to produce and sell essences of a Coarse level of purity only. Special licences are available for individuals who wish to produce high-grade essences but do not necessarily wish to sell them.

[OOC: First Class licences cost as much as normal alchemical licences, Second Class licences cost a Notable amount per turn, Third Class licences a Minor. Special licences are a matter of negotiation.]

Mystery Thief Makes Donation to Church

(The Horizon Tribune, 5th Autumn's Rise 4022 HR.) The Church of the Intersessor was today very surprised to find the Uthelm Chalice wrapped in an old pillow case and cushioned with socks abandoned on the doorstep of the Memorial Hospital.

"At first I thought it was an abandoned child - all wrapped up in swaddling as it was and in a basket but it was too small and once it was unwrapped... well... bless my eyes, we took it straight to the Cardinal!" said Sister Ruth who came across the artifact as she opened the doors that morning. The Cardinal identified the Chalice from its ornate interlaced gold weaving and the inset rubies along the rim. The Uthelm Chalice is one of the few rare examples of Irgarim metalwork to survive from the middle of the First Age, at the dawn of the Empire. The Chalice is worth thousands of Guilders and had been stolen the night before from a collector in the Noble district. The Cardinal informed the owners of its disappearance and it appears that this was the first they knew about it, having not realised it had gone missing. The Item was immediately returned to the owners and in gratitude they have given a reward to the church for their help and swift action.

Oddly enough a note was reported to have accompanied the bundle stating it was courtesy of "an anonymous supporter".

Horse Guard Arrested Over "Weapon Theft"

(The Liberator, 7th Autumn's Rise 4022 HR.) Once again, we see the heavy-handed boots of bureaucracy and iniquity stamping on the honest, hard-working fingers of the common Watchdog. Sammy Smith, a member of Sgt. Bilko's Horse Guard, stands accused of the theft of weapons from the Guard's stores and their supply to the HPLF. Never mind that there are no known ties between Smith and the HPLF; never mind that a colleague of Smith's (who will remain unnamed in order to protect him from the monolithic cogs of justice) happened to see him sleeping at the time that the burglary was alleged to have taken place. No, the Watchdogs have their scapegoat, and that's all that matters.

Sammy Smith's trial comes up on the 10th of Autumn's Glory.

Enormous Flying Apology "Due to Bees"

(The Horizon Times, 9th Autumn's Rise 4022 HR.) One can hardly have missed the letters which appeared above Horizon for two hours from approximately 1.45pm yesterday afternoon. The huge message across the sky had many baffled, reading as it did "APOLOGIEZZZ FOR THE INCONVENIENZZZ".

The cryptic message was first believed to have been a communication from the Sky apologising for some imminent "inconvenience", and the Horse Guards had to be called in to quell panic in several locations. Now, however, leading occultists and clockworkers have discovered a more mundane source. The letters appear to have consisted of the many clockwork bees recently seen about Horizon, flying in formation - although perhaps the unusual spelling may have been a clue here. Clockworker E. Crake says: "I'd thought it was odd that none of the little buggers had been trying to get into my lab during the whole day. When I checked with my colleagues, it became apparent that nobody had seen hide nor hair of them. Not that the bees have hair, of course."

Interestingly, the bees seem to have since then abandoned their irritating habit of stealing pieces of clockwork. Several scrap metal dealers around the city have, however, reported a curious new activity.

"I was doing up the records," says Aaron Scroggins, "when I saw a whole bunch of coins come floating through the window. At first I'd thought I was going mad, but then I realised they were being carried by the bees. One by one they dropped them on my desk. I picked one up to look at it, and they all dived through the back window and flew off carrying a pair of broken clockwork wings that somebody sold me for a few shillings."

Counting up the coins, Scroggins was startled to discover that the total amount the bees had left was - more or less - equal to the value of the wings.

Clockworkers, too, have reported business dealings with the bees. J. Cummings, a reputed crafter of clockwork wings, claims that a swarm of bees buzzed into his office carrying what he describes as "the most finely-crafted cogs I've seen in my life". As he picked them up to inspect them, the bees swarmed into his till and came out with twenty shillings - just about a tenth below the common market price for the components provided to Cummings.

Have the clockwork bees, formerly a scourge upon our city, finally turned over a new leaf and moved into the realm of honest merchantile craftsmanship? The Times believes so.

New Compact Reached Between Clockers and Makers

(The Horizon Tribune, 11th Autumn's Rise 4022 HR.) Following negotations between the Clockworkers' guild, the government, and the nascent "clocker" community of clockwork intelligences (largely represented by Sternos, the former Ghoul headman), a settlement has been reached on the responsibility to their makers of new "Clocker" citizens. As under the recent set of proposals, clockers will owe a debt to their makers on creation, which must be repaid (in labour, for example). Those choosing to serve the City of Horizon for five years will have their debt paid by the city as before. In recognition of the "Clockers" status as beings in their own rights, though, the clockworker (or the City of Horizon, as applicable) will now be obliged to educate and care for the young clocker during their period of indenture. The Tribune welcomes this humanitarian alteration, and approves the new legislation.

BLACKFEST APOCALYPSE: "THE BLACK" FAMILY VANISH

(The Horizon Post, 13th Autumn's Rise 4022 HR.) A BIZARRE and possibly TRAGIC conclusion to the (now annual) Blackfest "metal" music concert at the DARK TOWER tavern, last night. Your correspondent was attending the event in the happy knowledge that it couldn't possibly hurt as much as last year. Your correspondent was, of course, mistaken. Just as the super-modified pitch tuners for which metal is "fondly" known were easing me over the pain threshold, an unknown act of SABOTAGE in the middle of the Annihilation X set caused the actual explosion of the tuners. Very shortly followed by the sudden collapse of the Dark Tower lighting system, the result was an extremely BLOODY panic and stampede among the frightened metal fans. Any resident of the Trade District will tell you the sequel; a short but vicious (and extremely sweary) riot that was abruptly dispersed by the Mayoral Legion, who were apparently expecting something like this.

Obviously the explosion and rioting did considerable damage to the Dark Tower and its already questionable reputation, but worse was to come. When your correspondent attended the customary presentation of anti-terrorism and public nusiance orders to WARLOCK of WET ANARCHOLES THE BLACK this morning, there was no-one to be found. Officials prised open his usual HAVEN of DOOM (the cellar), but Anarcholes - along with the entire Black family - was nowhere to be found. At the moment, no-one seems to know where Horizon's longest serving DASTARDLY DICTATOR and his family are. Could it be the FINAL MASTERSTROKE in a plan to SEIZE the CITY at long last? PROBABLY NOT! But only THE HORIZON POST can bring you THE TRUTH!

[OOC: Eristopheles the Black (Sophitia, etc.) has been retired as a PC.]

Presidential Grace

(The Horizon Times, 15th Autumn's Rise 4022 HR.) Today the Times expresses out envy for the leaders of our city, who are meeting newly-appointed UFS President Gabriella Rostefan as she begins her state visit to Horizon. Since the UFS breakaway ten years ago relations between Horizon and the State have been poor, and this visit symbolises a new era of relations between the two countries that has arisen since the common response to the Kraeling threat. The graceful and charming Ms. Rostefan has been noted as a quiet but statesmanlike influence on the UFS government for some years, and it is hoped that her example will serve to guide the increasingly erratic government of Mayor Wright. Indeed, it is whispered that senior figures have already expressed a desire for her guidance on various issues.

President Rostefan will begin her visit with a tour of some of Horizon's more famous landmarks, escorted by Mayor Wright.

Dracion's Meteoric Rise Sees Two-Leader Situation In Democratic Party

(The Horizon Tribune, 17th Autumn's Rise 4022 HR.) It all began early in Autumn's Dawn, when Dockyard celebrity Dracion declared for the Democratic Party of Horizon. He brought with him two resources: numerous political allies to stand in wards across the city and a hitherto un-hinted at talent for public speaking. In a series of breathtaking rallies in te Docks, the Steam, the Ruins, the Trade District, and the Upper City in support of DPH candidates - including many convinced to stand by Dracion himself - Dracion drew large, cheering crowds, who hung on his every word.

Meanwhile, war hero Michael d'Avenant has also been making sterling efforts on behalf of the Party, encouraging fellow war veterans to stand in the Upper City and in various outlying regions beyond the city itself as well as supporting Dracion's efforts. Recently, d'Avenant has also made his mark as a policymaker - a recent meeting of the Democratic Party executive voted to support various d'Avenant policies - low taxation, deregulation and liberalisation of the economy, and an immediate reversal of the legalisation of human shamanism.

The Democrats' electoral rivals, however, have persistently suggested that there is hidden cracks in the party. It is true that a small number of Party members - including a number of founders - have privately expressed disapproval of the shift of the Democratic Party's focus away from supporting the Mayor's policies. This, however, seems to be a minor inconvenience - with the Mayor's increasingly erratic behaviour drawing more and more comments, it is unsurprising that the pro-Wright faction of the Democratic Party has made little headway.

Of perhaps more concern to the Democratic Party is the apparent clash of personalities at the Party's head. Dracion's rousing public speeches have led him to become, in the eyes of many, the face of the Democratic campaign - however, Michael d'Avenant's campaign literature is clearly focused on making his the name primarily associated with the Democratic cause. Party officials - and Dracion and d'Avenant themselves - deny that there is any rift between the two men. However, it is apparent that there are some Democratic candidates who invoke Dracion's name when they want to win applause, and some who invoke d'Avenant's, and some who invoke neither. Few these days mention the Mayor.

The Party executive has recently elected Dracion the Party Leader and d'Avenant the Party Chairman, in an apparent effort to reach a compromise: the idea is that Dracion, as Party Leader, will co-ordinate the efforts of Democratic Party members in Goodly Chamber debates, whilst d'Avenant as Chairman will chair meetings of the Party executive and various policy-making committees. It remains to be seen how long this arrangement will last.

DRAGON APPEARS IN TRUE LANDS, DESTROYS JURICAN TRIBE

(The Horizon Post, 19th Autumn's Rise 4022 HR.) A PREVIOUSLY UNKNOWN DRAGON has been seen over the newly SMOKING DESERTS of Jurica. Reports from the University of Marvels have described this TERRIBLE LIZARD as having bright green scales and amber eyes and in the region of TWO HUNDRED FEET LONG! Where this fearsome creature appeared from is unknown as first sightings of it were reported in the Desert itself as a few lone survivors of the Tribe of the Scourge staggered into Charim.

"It came from nowhere, dived from the sky upon us burning all in its path. It seemed to hunt for something or someone but ate all who opposed it with a ravenous hunger. It soon came upon the tent of our mighty leader MUSTAPHA THE SCOURGE whereupon it lifted the tent with ease and blocked our view with it's mighty wings and prevented our approach with a ring of fire! In fear we waited as it stood there before our leader and as it bent its head it appeared to converse with the Scourge. Before long a mighty laugh was heard and it seemed the bones of the earth shook as the dragon quaked. It snapped its head down once, lifted it to the sky and swallowed the Scourge whole! Then with wings like thunder it departed leaving us in our Ruin."

Dockyard Bloodsports Scene Vibrant

(The Underworld Intelligencer, 21st Autumn's Rise 4022 HR.) With the legalisation of blood sports from Mayor Wright comes a wave of these events in the Docks and Trade districts. The Dockyard rats this month have been running a number of new bare-knuckle boxing rings and pit fights to engage the masses. As well as two competitions for a champion boxer and fencer. With the prize of a golden goblet overflowing with guilders, the interest has been high with knock out round in both Boxing and in fencing producing the two champions Gilbert Logsham in boxing and Baron Michael D'Avenant, head of the Dockyard rats, in Fencing. The two champions where then pitted against each other in Boxing, fencing and finally skylarking each to be fought to first blood. The Boxing went clearly to Gilbert whose shear size gave him an overwhelming advantage. This was followed by the fencing which was a close run event, with both sides being pretty equally matched however the prize eventually went to D'Avenant whose superior agility eventually won it. The final decider, the skylarking, proved d'Avenant's mastery of the wings became highly apparent as he zipped and twirled past Gilbert's every lunge returning them with his own more often than no found their mark. Winning him the prize money. In a selfless gesture following this victory, D'Avenant nobly announced he was donating the entirety of his winnings to the Church hospitals - however, the Church has refused to benefit from bloodsporting events, and so d'Avenant sent his prize money to the del Orto orphanage instead.

Crisis Again at Central Steam

(The People's Truth, 23rd Autumn's Rise 4022 HR.) How disappointing to see the promises of the Treasury undermined, once more, by the duplicitious activities of the management of Central Steam. The Steam Union is to hold another ballot on strike action after a meeting of its steering committee upheld a motion censuring the Central Steam management for "whilst holding to the letter of the previous agreement, greviously abusing its spirit, and in general acting in bad faith towards the steamworkers of Central Steam".

The catalogue of spiteful actions on behalf of Central Steam management compiled by the Steam Union indicates that almost as soon as the previous deal was reached, the managers began looking for other ways to cut costs, implementing a series of "efficiency drives" dedicated to undermining the workers. The policies in question include:

  • A massive reduction in spending on security, since apparently the safety of those who work in Central Steam is not a priority.

  • A slow erosion of staff benefits. Reductions in the subsidies in the staff canteen, re-allocating staff smoking rooms to be offices and thus forcing smokers outside on their breaks, and other such policy changes have slowly but surely made Central Steam a less pleasant place to work with.

  • The implementation of a time card system which severely docks the pay of workers forlate arrival or long lunch or tea breaks, in the name of efficience, and a policy of encouraging employees to inform on one another to prevent rule-breaking employees will be encouraged, via incentives, to inform on others who break the new rules. Not only does this development show a scandalously low level of trust in the workers of Central Steam, but it also punishes workers who, for example, have to attend family emergencies unexpectedly.

  • A slow drift away from utilising permanent staff and towards using contracted labour. In the past twomonth new recruits have tended to be employed on short term contracts. The implications for job security are stark.

  • Most significantly a steady reduction in authorised overtime, to the point where all employees are only allowed to work their standard hours. This is a blatant attempt to reduce the wages bill while sticking to the letter of the agreement made between the Steam Union and the Treasury.

With the brightest and best workers being poached by private industry, he Steam Union has accused the Central Steam management of running the service into the ground. "Our nationalised Steam service," says the Union statement, "deserves the very best workers, and yet the management of Central Steam seem intent on treating their staff with contempt. We are going to once again take this issue to our members, and we warn the Treasury that this time we will not be satisfied unless heads roll in the Central Steam management."

Election '22

A regular column discussing the upcoming election.

(The Horizon Tribune, 25th Autumn's Rise 4022 HR.) With two months left before the election, it's time to look at the results of our latest opinion poll.

The Democratic Party has made the most advances this time around; whilst Prosperity has succeeded by and large in preventing it from gaining a foothold in the Upper City, CASA has found itself at a disadvantage campaigning against the Democrats; the people of the Ruins, in particular, where a number of wards had polled strongly for CASA previously, have warmed to the Democratic Party now that it too has come down against shamanism, and Dracion's rallies have won supporters away from both CASA and Prosperity - although Prosperity have made up for it with the support of Mariana Hess winning them support in the Ruins and in the outlying regions of Horizon which saw the worst of the wars. The Horizon People's Party, however, continues to polarise opinions: with the apparent strength of the Steam Union having been demonstrated this twomonth in the Central Steam case, both the HPP's supporters and its detractors have dug their heels in. As a result, the Steam remains split between the HPP and Prosperity. Based on our poll, if an election were held tomorrow the 700 seats of the new Goodly Chamber would be divided thusly:

385 for the Democratic Party
144 for Prosperity
89 for the Horizon People's Party
50 for Colonies and Countryside
30 for CASA
12 for the Circular Voice

predicting an absolute majority for the Democratic party.

An additional poll we conducted of Democratic Party supporters asked which of Dracion and Michael d'Avenant they felt a preference for. The results were intriguing:

40% d'Avenant
33% Dracion
27% neither

with most of the "neither" results coming from the Slums, where Christopher Columna's profile overshadows theirs. Dracion's rapid surge in popularity - especially considering d'Avenant's head start - must be of some concern to the well-known war hero, but only time will tell if they can resolve their differences amicably.

[OOC: The election will take place in this coming turn, the results being announced in the session of 6th week (21st February).]

On the Grapevine

Dracion's Concern

It was inevitable, really - the boys in the lower ranks wanted to show their gratitude to Dracion for how he's really turned Jude's Concern around after Betts' mismanagement, and so they came up with an idea for a name change. They sent a deputation to talk to the man himself, and modest as ever he tried to dissuade them, but in the end he gave up and approved it. So, we're called Dracion's Concern now. Spread the word.

Roberts' Farewell Party

Oh, you should have been there! It was the best shindig I've been to in a long while and no mistake. No expense spared by the look of it. Ale flowing like... well... flowing ale but there was a lot of it and no mistake. Lt. Roberts is a fine chap - shame to see him parting ways with the Rats but I guess that's what he feels he has to do. He's set us up with some nifty contacts - see that guy over there? I hear he can get us good deals on parts for flying taxi repair.

Virros Promoting EasyGirl In Ruins

Hmmm... Two for the price of one eh? And points on my loyalty card? Very tempting that's for sure. Where did I find out about the deals? There's fliers all around the Ruins and posters on every corner. Looks pretty good to me. I guess it's a bit of a trek to the nearest one, but the Docks aren't that much further than the Slums and their prices are very competitive. Gary went there last week and he's been raving about it ever since. Even has a seal of approval from Shoreleave house - guaranteed quality! (Well, they're clean and disease-free at least.) Next time I'm definitely going to EasyGirl!

THE D'AVENANT STORY

(Exerpt from a pamphlet by Eagle Publishing, Inc.)

...how a young child, wronged by his monstrous brother, was robbed of his inheritance and forced to take to the seas; how he won glory as a privateer, experiencing many amazing adventures, while his brother sank into rank Imperialism at home; how he returned to the city of his birth, having built himself up from nothing; how he saved the Trading District from a crime wave; how he battled Kraelings and bargained with dragons in the Treacherous Lands; how he inherited his brother's estates after the brother, like all vile Imperialists, was eaten by a horrible monster, and yet was generous enough to leave his wealth to our hero to right the old wrong; how our hero used his Heptarchical powers for the good of the common man, voting for the Demagogue; how he fought like a hero against Johnny Vegdarbarran; how he (Yes! It was he! The story can finally be told!) seized the treacherous heads of the Grey Order, who dared to sell weapons to Horizon's enemies; how he embraced the cause of the DPH for the Good of the People; how he single-handedly saved Horizon from military dictatorship; how he became the champion of the Horizon fencing and Extreme Skylarking circles, but gave all the money to charity; how he fell in love, and wooed and won the beautiful Princess Marietta Vatarsha.

It's a hell of a story, and it's available to you for just ten shillings.

News Sources

So that you can make a decision on how much to believe each news source, here's some details on the various peridoicals.

The Town Crier

The Town Crier is a dull, dry periodical which publishes official proclamations from the government and the Embassies, notices of births, marriages and deaths amongst the upper classes, transcriptions of debates in the Goodly Chamber, and other such official business. Few people actually read it, although many journalists consult it when they want to find out the official take on a particular issue.

The Horizon Tribune

Super-respectable periodical; never under-researches its facts, never skimps on in-depth analysis, does not report on frivolous issues. Has all the right opinions on politics; supports Colonel Zero broadly, but far from unconditionally. Held up by the great and good as an example of everything that's right about journalism. Lots of people have it on their coffee tables to impress visitors; many, many fewer actually read it. Old numbers are usually popular with the Beggars, too.

The Horizon Times

Owned by Ian Loveday, the Horizon Times is beloved by the upper classes since it can be relied on not to stray too far from opinions they hold themselves. It is something of a mouthpiece for Loveday, although he is careful not to abuse this too much; it can usually be trusted when it isn't talking about its beloved owner, but readers should be careful of its subtle political bias.

The People's Truth

The official newspaper of the Horizon People's Party, a Richterist party running for election in the new, elected Goodly Chamber. It's marketed as an upmarket, respectable periodical, but it's stuffed to the brim with propaganda.

The Horizon Post

Utter rag. The events reported on the first few pages occasionally bear some resemblance to things that actually happened, though with few facts and more "hilarious", or enraged, commentary. After that, the paper's avowed purpose to "bring you the TRUTH on the hidden world of the supernatural" means that the stories tend to come from bored peasants or drunkards paid to talk about their "experiences" with Shamans, Gods, Treacherous Beasties, Fae, the Emperor, whatever. Very occasionally, one of these stories is actually true, although this is more or less coincidence.

The Horizon Illuminator

The Illuminator matches its great rival (the Post) for sensationalism, but specialises in gossip, innuendo, and scandalous allegations as opposed to the supernatural. It is another newspaper owned by Ian Loveday, and is somewhat more blatant about pandering to his views than the Times is.

The Underworld Intelligencer

Another muck-raking scandal sheet, along similar lines to the Horizon Post and the Horizon Illuminator, which has recently become prominant. It is notable mainly for its willingness to name individuals and organisations outright, a step many reporting on Horizon's criminal underground are somewhat unwilling to take (rightly fearing reprisals); as such, while it has the morals and ethics of a gutter newspaper, it is effectively an underground rag, having been driven into secrecy by fear of the mobs rather than by governmental disapproval.

The Liberator

The mouthpiece of the HPLF, the Liberator is subversive, anti-authoritarian, and fashionably dangerous to read. Burn it or pass it on after you've finished with it, and don't let the Watchdogs find it on you. It is also referred to as the "Lirbatore" by spiteful critics of its editorial eccentricities.

Skylarker's Monthly

The newest publication to hit the streets, Skylarker's Monthly is doing a roaring trade amongst the many devotees of the new sport, as well as bookies seeking the latest information on the competitors.

Fitzkarald Monthly

Fitzkarald Monthly is the official in-house publication of the Fitzkarald Opera House and is widely-read in theatrical circles.

The Amateur Natural Philosopher's Periodical

This highbrow magazine is an earnest attempt by University academics to present the latest discoveries in natural philosophy, alchemy, esoterica and so forth in a clear and easily-understoond manner. Their fact-checking is rigorous, to the extent that some stories have been delayed for months whilst the facts are established.

Clockwork Today

A regularly-produced glossy brochure in which the Clockwork Guild promotes its members' talents.

New Alchemist

Must-read material for all alchemists - licenced or otherwise - New Alchemist reports on the cutting edge of alchemical research.

Occult Correspondences

Less interesting than its name implies, this is a dry academic journal devoted to the publication of highly theoretical papers concerning natural philosophy and its related fields.

The People of Lasinia

Published in Horizon, this paper advocates, discusses and attempts to organise a "campaign for social justice" in Lasinia. What exactly this means is somewhat unclear, but would definitely involve the overthrow of the existing social order, possibly in bloody mayhem, and replacing it with something more egalitarian. It also specialises in exposing corruption and incompetence in high places in the Lasinian government (indeed some have said that it must have multiple sources on the inside). Needless to say the People is illegal under pain of imprsonment or worse in Lasinia, and the unofficial spies of Lasinia are forever trying to shut it down.

The Grapevine

Of course, the printed word has no monopoly on truth. Many stories that don't make the newspapers still get the underground buzzing with rumour and speculation. The most widely-circulated speculation is presented here.
