HORIZON IS OVER!

The webpage remains up as a permanent archive of game material, mainly for the benefit of nostalgic players - although if you'd like to run a Horizon-inspired game for your friends, that's wonderful too. Horizon will be succeeded by Legacyin Trinity term of 2006.

If you like you can look at the (sketchy, incomplete) GM notes as well.

The News

Turn 10

This news covers events from the 1st of Spring's Glory, 4022 HR, to the 25th of Spring's Dusk - the day of the Riverview meeting. In each section, stories are sorted in roughly chronological order, although in the case of the Grapevine it's hard to tell precisely when rumours begin, and it's rare that anything appearing in the Pamphlet Gallery is dated.

In the Papers

[OOC: All Liberator articles this turn are printed using the old-fashioned presses they were forced to use after their Greywriters broke down.]

*** WALL VANISHES ***

Directions Coiling Up In Horizon * True and Treacherous Comingle * Cosmological Upheavals Continue

(The Horizon Tribune, 8th Spring's Glory 4022 HR.) Few citizens of Horizon need reminding of the events of about a week ago - about how an unseasonal mist descended upon all the lands at the foot of the Wall, obscuring that great edifice from view, and how the mist cleared to reveal that the Wall had become a mountain range, Horizon's gate had become a wide mountain pass, and the Hive had become a fortress at the mountain's peak. It is only now, however, that this paper feels competant to fully report on the issues arising from this startling turn of events, and speculate as to its causes and consequences.

Metaphysicians and occultists from the Imperial University have been intensively studying the new mountains, and have found that the transformation is almost complete. (Vegdarbarran propaganda messages imply that a similar transformation has taken place all along the wall, and the breach currently occupied by an ancient dragon matriarch has become a labyrinthine cave complex.) Here and there a few bricks have retained their form, but by and large the Wall as it was is gone. The mountains are still tall enough to cause night to fall as usual close to them, but deeper in the True and Treacherous Lands night does not become quite as dark as it used to - it is always daytime in the middle of the Jurican desert, and in the Hive itself (which is on top of one of the mountains, and is still only accessible by flying). This phenomenon has led to the mountains gaining the charming name of the Mountains of Dusk. Professor Fisk of the Horizon Geological Survey gave us this summary of the latest theories of the phenomenon's cause:

"The legends of the mythic dreamtime tell us that when the Wall was built entire mountans were rendered down to produce the bricks. It is possible that some unknown party has introduced a perfectly pure sample of Land Essence to the Wall, causing the rock it is hewn from to remember its former nature, and to revert to it. The, ah, immediate consequence of this is that the idea of `True Lands' and `Treacherous Lands' is now of purely historical interest: cosmologically speaking, we are all Treacherous now."

The transformation of the Wall has indeed apparently made passage between True and Treacherous easier - up to a point. Scouts from the Mayoral Legions have discovered that the mountains are highly treacherous if one does not use an established pass to cross them, and the only known major pass is that which is guarded by Old and New Horizon. Individuals, small parties, and the occasional monster can travel through the mountains; entire armies or tribes making the attempt would find themselves decimated by rockfalls, landslides, hidden crevasses and other pitfalls. Some superstitious explorers have suggested that the mountains do not appreciate being crossed. Meanwhile, the directions of Truewards and Wallwards, now redundant, have collapsed - but not disappeared. Reports from abandoned regions of the Slums and Ruins, and areas within New Horizon, suggest that they have instead coiled up and hidden deep within those twin cities. Rumours of strange, abandoned streets and alleys, lined with empty houses and abandoned market stalls and filled with silence and wind, have spread like wildfire, as have wild stories of wonders and terrors to be discovered within. The simplification of geography has proved useful. The Mountains of Dusk seem to be a perfectly circular range, making the True Lands a small enclave within the greater region of the Treacherous. Stories of forests on the move, islands losing their moorings, and rivers running uphill suggest that the geographical upheaval caused by the loss of the Wall may continue for some time.

The political consequences of this event are already unfolding. The nations of Horizon and New Horizon have united as one, the distinction appearing now purely academic. The Governor of New Horizon has, however, been appointed by David Wright as Minister for Reunification, to oversee the smooth union of colony and home nation. Meanwhile, there have been reports that a group of fairies have attempted to set up an embassy in Lasinia; they appear to have been rebuffed by the Soviet regime, which has declared that "the regime in the land of the Fair Folk is, as far as we are aware, an oligarchial monarchy. We are, however, interested in making contact with any revolutionary movement of the fairy people which may exist."

When asked for his comment on the disappearance of the Wall and the relocation of his home and workplace to the top of a very tall mountain, Mayor David Wright said "Wow, isn't this cool? You can see for miles from up here!"

DOCKYARD HOME GUARD ENGAGES IN PRACTICE DRILLS

(The Horizon Post, 10th Spring's Glory 4022 HR.) THREE CHEERS for the Dockyard branch of the Home Guard! The plucky volunteers have begun a series of EXERCISES AND DRILLS to ensure they are prepared to REPEL any INVASION BY SEA! Surely a stern warning to the Vegdarbarran MENACE: HANDS OFF OUR DOCKS!

Kellor Renegades Operating In Refugee Camp

(The Liberator, 12th Spring's Glory 4022 HR.) It must be nice to have your very own private concentration camp in your back garden. That's precisely what Klaus von Jäger has been presiding over recently - and it has come to our attention that his "refugee camp" for displaced Vegdarbarran citizens has now become a feeding ground for renegade members of the infamous Kellor family. Recruiting the more larcenous, brutal refugees and shaking down others for what little valuables they brought with them, the rebel Kellor - still operating without the sanction of Christopher Columna - seem to be able to operate within the camp with impunity. With the residents also subject to gruelling interrogations by secret police agents of Horizon and - rumour has it - Lasinia, one can only wonder what the aristocratic von Jäger vermin will do next to make the refugees' lives miserable.

CLOCKWORK BEES DEPLOYED IN WAR

(The Horizon Post, 14th Spring's Glory 4022 HR.) Amongst the vast amounts of technology being deployed to aid our boys on the FRONTLINE the Horizon Post has discovered that our forces have employed the use of DREADED MECHANICAL BEES. The devices are crafted using clockwork, with SPRING-POWERED wings and are roughly the same shape and size as the real thing. They have been used by the airforce to attack ships, some of them coated in POTENT ALCHEMICAL ESSENCES which disrupt the vile Vegdarbarran technology. The bees have proven adept at BLOWING UP vital components of Vegdarbarran airships, causing them to plummet to earth.

The Horizon Post congratulates our CLOCKWORKERS in the efforts to drive back the VEGDARBARRAN MENACE.

Merchant's Arm-Connected Thugs Found Dead In Alleyway

(The Horizon Times, 16th Spring's Glory 4022 HR.) A group of apparently linked men have all been found dead in an ally in the Steam district after what the Watchdogs have described as a gangland attack. The street fight is thought to have occured late last night when shots were heard from neighbouring buildings, although before the Watchdogs could intervene the conflict had been resolved. Although an investigation is underway it is unlikely that any arrests will be made in the near future due to lack of evidence and no witnesses forthcoming.

Aerial Brigade Intercepts Shipment of Grey Technology to Vegdarbarra

(The Horizon Tribune, 18th Spring's Glory 4022 HR.) A shipment of Grey technology has been intercepted on the way to Vegdarbarra by Lt. Roberts' Aerial Brigade. The weaponry, hidden in a trading vessal registered in Irgar, is of a high quality, and the discovery of the shipment raises difficult questions for the Grey Order. Whilst the Order maintains that supports Horizon against Vegdarbarra, few third parties have access to the technology reported to be included in the haul. Irgar has denied all knowledge of the shipment, and the Grey Order have scornfully rejected suggestions that a hitherto unknown organisation could have cracked the secrets of their technology. The mystery of who precisely is responsible for the shipment remains unresolved, but has provoked a chill in relations between Horizon and the Grey Order.

Randolph Stalls New National Treasurer

(The Horizon Times, 20th Spring's Glory 4022 HR.) David Wright's newly installed National Treasurer, Randolph Stalls, seems set to continue the previous policies of taxation and nationalisation established in recent years. Aided by deputies Peter Young and Bernard Hayes-Morton, Stalls is also expected to preside over sweeping reforms of the Treasury, intended by Mayor Wright to battle corruption and make the tax system more accessible and less of a burden on the poorest citizens of Horizon.

Stalls' first deed as National Treasurer has been to impose a ban on foreign investment in Horizon-based businesses during the course of the war. "We simply can't allow Irgarim or Jurican investors to exploit the strain caused by the war to purchase key parts of our infrastructure," said Stalls. "Government loans will be available to important businesses in financial difficulty to keep them afloat. We understand that the business community has had to make numerous sacrifices in the course of the war effort - but can any sacrifice really equal that of our young men and women on the front line?"

Stalls has also declared that small businesses making a direct contribution to the war effort will be able to take advantage of "patriotic tax rebates", in a move widely perceived to be a concession to the Small Business Legal Defence Fund, whose legal challenges to recent tax increases continue to be heard in the courts.

HOME GUARD PUTS DOWN RATIONS RIOT AFTER HORSE GUARDS FAIL

(The Horizon Illuminator, 22nd Spring's Glory 4022 HR.) The Home Guard have today proved their worth by dispersing a RIOT over food rations in the slums. Scares over food sparked the street PROTESTS after it seems that supplies had been accidentally rediverted to the wrong part of the city. The HORSE GUARDS were called in when the riot first started, but seemed unable to keep order with horses BUCKING their riders and the guardsmen seemingly unable to maintain formation. Just as it looked like the riots were about SPILL OVER into the Trade District the Home Guard known as FAMILY AND FRIENDS AGAINST THE INVADERS stepped in and managed to disperse the crowds with a judicious display of force. By the time further Watchdog support arrived, the crowds had left and only the DISHEVELLED HORSE GUARD remained trying to round up a couple of mares who had bucked and run off into the Slums.

THE ILLUMINATOR SAYS: THREE CHEERS FOR THE HOME GUARD. SHAPE UP TO THE HORSE GUARD.

White Lost for Good

(The Horizon Times, 24th Spring's Glory 4022 HR.) Watchdogs have recently called off the search for Joshua White, the private investigator and trans-Wall drug smuggler missing since his escape from the Doghouse two months ago. A number of sightings had been reported from New Horizon of an individual matching White's description but posing as a priest of the Intercessor and calling himself Father Bayleaf. Investigation of these sightings revealed that while the individual in question almost certainly was White, he had already travelled to the UFS, and was therefore beyond the juridiction of Horizon authorities. There are no plans to attempt an extradition.

SIEGE OF THE DARK TOWER LIFTED, FREE BEER ALL ROUND

(The Horizon Post, 1st Spring's Dusk 4022 HR.) Compromise was finally struck in the early hours of this morning when an official peace treaty was signed between the City of Horizon and Anarcholes the Black. On condition that he release no more "doom-bolts" within the city limits, Anarcholes' internment order was agreed to be subjected to a review, meaning that he will remain at home for the time being. In the absence of Mayor Wright, the treaty was signed for the city by dustman Geoff Parks (64). Anarcholes denies that he's forgotten how to do the doom-bolts, and decribes the treaty as "complete and unequivocal world-crushing VICTORY."

The Hayes-Morton Interview II

(The Horizon Tribune, 3rd Spring's Dusk 4022 HR.) Just over half a year ago, this newspaper was able to bring you an exclusive interview with Bernard Hayes-Morton, investor and public servant, in which he detailed his struggle with desert wine, and made accusations against the Faithman Mayoral campaign which would later prove prophetic. With his new appointment as an advisor to Randolph Stalls, the new National Treasurer, Hayes-Morton is one of the individuals taksed with implementing the nationalising, wealth redistributing policies of the Wright government.

In an exclusive supplement to today's Tribune, Bernard Hayes-Morton again gives us an insight into his life and work. He speaks of the disappointment caused within the Treasury by the Merchant's Arm's rejection of legal methods, and opines that while there are many honest businessmen in Horizon, the Merchant's Arm not represent them. He outlines how he, himself, accepted financial losses in the sale of his arms factories during nationalisation, feeling that there is no place for profiteering when friends and neighbours are laying down their lives for all.

He also addresses the libellous rumours alluded to in the Tribune's less respectable competitors, accusations relating to his sexual proclivities and conduct, and his alleged return to addiction. The Tribune cannot yet speculate as to which of Hayes-Morton's political enemies would spread such slander about a man who is clearly merely waiting for the right woman to come into his life - a life built around service ot his city - but can only hope that whichever individual is responsible ceases this malicious activity before precious reputations are forever soiled.

WRIGHT INSPECTS TROOPS WITH MARKAN IN TOW

(The Horizon Illuminator, 5th Spring's Dusk 4022 HR.) Mayor Wright today undertook a tour of the troops at the front line! This inspection of the Privates, Lieutenants and Captains was set to INSPIRE confidence in the men as they go out to FIGHT for the VICTORY of Horizon. With him on this journey was Miss Markan, a regular in the Mayor's entourage now. This journalist wonders whether the Mayor's denials of ROMANCE in the air are true since she is seen with him JUST SO FREQUENTLY. (It must be lonely as the man at the top after all.) Miss Markan's offical role on the tour is unclear, however we at the Illuminator believe that she might be acting as some sort of spiritual advisor, not to mention a personal companion to the mayor. Both Mayor Wright and Miss Markan seemed INVIGORATED by the trip and the open air lifestyle seems to suit them both. Let us hope that he has calmed down from CROWD-SURFING days of the campaign.

LINKS BETWEEN ARM AND SONS OF RICHTER REVEALED
CHARGES BROUGHT AGAINST LEADING MERCHANTS' ARM MEMBERS
DETECTIVE ARMAND CARRACK LEADS ARRESTS

(The Horizon Tribune, 7th Spring's Dusk 4022 HR.) Following evidence presented by Watchdog Captain Lawson, leading tycoons Quentin Soap, Thomas Manderley and Piers Compton have been arrested by supersleuth Detective Armand Carrack and brought to trial. The charges: funding acts of terrorism under the auspices of the HPLF cell "The Sons of Richter". The dummy cell has been revealed to have been set up by agents of the Merchants' Arm with the intention of provoking the city's authorities to take stronger measures against the HPLF as a whole. The list of charges brought against the Sons includes the bombing of the Central Steam project, the coal silo explosion, the derailment of the Bread Line food train, and the kidnapping of Ian Loveday's daughter.

Snapper, Snapper and Krum, the Merchants' Arm legal team, have provided no comment at this time.

CLOCKWORK RIFLE STOLEN BY BEES

(The Horizon Post, 9th Spring's Dusk 4022 HR.) DANGER! Our latest story implies that sneaky JOHNNY VEGDARBARRAN may be using a new weapon in this latest WAR AGAINST FREEDOM. The weapon: HIGHLY-TRAINED BEES! Soldier Milne Thompson says: "I had just set down my rifle after polishing it, when this big swarm of bees settled down over it, picked it up, and flew off!"

The Post's zoological advisor, John Nemo, believes that these bees may have been CONDITIONED FROM BIRTH in top-secret VEGDARBARRAN BEEHIVES to fight against all lovers of freedom everywhere, and advises all its readers to SHOOT ALL AND ANY BEES THEY SEE with the nearest firearm they can lay hands on.

BILKO BOXES A HIT!

(The Horizon Illuminator, 11th Spring's Dusk 4022 HR.) Our boys at the front are being brought good cheer by none other than Sergeant Bilko! His idea of parcelling up spares - chocolate, cigarettes, and the like - from his stores that would have otherwise been thrown away and sending them to the front has caught on all across the line. Says Pvt. Wilkins (21): "I just can't wait to see what's inside Bilko's boxes." Pvt. Tommy (19), says: "All the men are really excitied about Bilko's boxes."

Strict Clockworkers Announce Invention of Clockwork People

(The Horizon Tribune, 13th Spring's Dusk 4022 HR.) The Strict Clockworkers were in a jubilant mood today, as blueprints for the manufacture of clockwork people - apparently developed by famed clockworker James Bisley and entrusted to the care of living dead not-Ghoul Sternos - were delivered to the Guildhouse. Mechanical individuals, capable of sentient thought, can now be produced by any Strict Clockworker given sufficient time, funding and materials.

Mayor David Wright has granted full civil rights to mechanical individuals, so long as they submit to an inspection by the Ministry of Public Works. "My concern is that irresponsible clockworkers may produce mechanical men with destructive, harmful tendencies embedded in their gears," he said. "Ministry clockworkers will examine each mechanical citizen produced, assess what tendencies are inherent in their design, and inform each clockwork individual of these tendencies on completion of this inspection, giving the clockwork individual an opportunity to change any aspect of his or her mental design he or she is dissatisfied with. It's my opinion that people are only free and responsible for their actions if they are capable of self-knowledge, and of choosing to change their ways."

Lesouge Executed

(The Horizon Tribune, 15th Spring's Dusk 4022 HR.) Following a week long trial and various magical tests, the emigre Lasinian nobleman Count Aristide Lesouge was yesterday established legally to be an avatar of the God Verachtlich. On that basis he was convicted of a variety of offences including theological collaboration, murder, and large - scale crimes against humanity. He was then executed by firing squad, and his body handed over to the Ghouls. The international cult which he is believed to have headed is thought to have been comprehensively broken up, with arrests over the last couple of weeeks in all four nations as well as Horizon itself. The consequences of the cult's actions may, however, linger for some time to come.

Among the many well - respected personages speaking at the trial was Sternos, former Ghoul headman and now apparently a Mechanical Citizen, who famously defeated the other two known avatars of Verachtlich, the Butcher and the Wrath, late last year. Also in attendance... (continues)

Kraelings of Kessereth Commit Genocide In Adhania

(The Horizon Tribune, 18th Spring's Dusk 4022 HR.) News is just arriving into Horizon that the so-called legitimate government in Adhania has fallen to invading forces of Kraelings from Kessereth. Refugees are reported to be fleeing the ghoul nation into the UFS with hopes of finding sanctuary there. As yet there is no confirmation as to how many survivors there have been of the carnage, but it is almost certain that the Star-aligned government has been completely obliterated, and the Ghoul homeland no longer survives as a nation. These worrying developments are under discussion by the government, who are already feeling the strain of the war against Vegdarbarra.

Reports have also reached Horizon that members of the Treacherous Colonies have managed to apprehend one member of the rampaging force, a young Kraeling who seems to have strayed from the main body of the forces. All intelligence suggests that for all the army is ruthless it also demonstrates a high degree of disorganisation. The captured Kraeling seemed to be suffering from a high degree of mental instability, possibility due to an inbalance in his affinities. He is recorded as ranting repeatedly about the apparent “messiah from the fire”, who he claims appeared from the heart of the sacred flame in Kessereth and declared himself their leader. Descriptions of the Kraeling leader seem to point to a young man with bright red hair and eyes.

Mayor Dissolves Goodly Chamber, Declares Elections

(The Horizon Tribune, 20th Spring's Dusk 4022 HR.) After months of negotiations, with many noble families still refusing to allow their sons to be conscripted unless they are guaranteed an officer's commission, Mayor David Wright has taken drastic action to end the political deadlock. Late last night, the following bulletin was issued from his office:

GIVEN THAT THE GOODLY FAMILES OF HORIZON:

  • have persisted in refusing to shoulder equally the burden of the war effort.
  • have continually demanded special treatment from the Mayoral Legions in a time of national crisis.
  • have collaborated frequently in the past with the Merchant's Arm, and boast a number of members of that terrorist-funding organisation amongst their ranks.

IT IS HEREBY DECREED THAT:

  • the Goodly Chamber shall henceforth be dissolved.
  • the hereditary succession of Chamber membership shall be abolished.
  • a new Chamber will be elected in due course by the people of Horizon, on a system of one citizen one vote, with full legislative powers, the ability to select ministers of state from its number, and the right to depose the Mayor given a successful vote of no confidence, the election of this chamber to take place on the 25th of Autumn's Dusk 4022 HR.

Signed and sealed this day, the 19th of Spring's Dusk 4022 Horizon Reckoning, by David Wright, Mayor and Governor of Horizons Old and New, in the Hive where it is always day.

This morning, Goodly Chamber members found this decree pinned to the locked doors of the Chamber. A number of members had to be escorted out by Watchdogs after attempting to ram open the doors with a nearby bench; the others were allowed to remain long enough to collect their papers from their offices before returning home.

The Goodly Chamber has only ever been an advisory body, and little is expected to change in the day-to-day running of Horizon's government until the more powerful elected Chamber comes into being. The sudden loss of their political voice, however, has outraged many in the Noble District, especially when combined with a wave of arrests of noble sons for draft-dodging. (The individuals in question will spend a week in the Doghouse before being transferred to the front.) In the Lower City, however, the move has proved wildly popular the Goodly Chamber being regarded by many as a toothless waste of money existing mainly to indulge the vanity of the aristocracy.

In the divide between Horizon's Lower and Upper Cities, David Wright has clearly aligned himself with the Lower. It remains to be seen whether this gambit will bear fruit.

[OOC: The Goodly Chamber elections will take place at the end of Turn 14, so the results will be declared during the session in 6th week - that'll be the session on the 21st of February.]

Ryan Columna Found Dead In Street - Nightbeast Accused!

(The Underworld Intelligencer, 22nd Spring's Dusk 4022 HR.) The former head of the WBI, Ryan Columna, was found shot dead in the streets of the Slums this morning. The body was found outside one of the smarter parts of the Slums in an area known to be under the influence of the Kellor family. Witnesses have stepped forward claiming that they saw "Nightbeast" fleeing the area. Interestingly, Ryan Columna was found wearing the clothes of William Kellor - as yet William Kellor's relations have not realeased a statement.

The Watchdogs have started an investigation into the incident however they also have refused to comment on what the founder and former leader of the WBI was doing disguised as a mob boss in the slums. David Wright, meanwhile, has revealed that Ryan Columna had managed to survive the previous attempt on his life - the individual seen entering his office shortly before the blast being a hired double - and was in contact with the Mayor and the Watchdog commission before he died. The Mayor, however, has expressed bafflement at the William Kellor connection.

Ghoulish investigators have confirmed that it is the body of Ryan Columna and that the death is not to be considered murder but "pre-emptive self-defence", the legalistic euphemism for a lawful killing under the Twin Silvers agreement.

Lasinian Cultural Fair Held In Horizon

(The People's Truth, 24th Spring's Dusk 4022 HR.) The week our Lasinian friends held a festival of revolutionary culture in order to improve understanding between Lasinia and Horizon. As well as the traditional songs and dances of the Lasinian proletariat, there were also some speeches made by Lasinian commanders including a crowd-stirring speech by Captain Zharkov about the Lasinian revolution and how it has been misunderstood by Horizon owing to propaganda from the exiled Lasinian aristocrats.

Zharkov's speech was a timely reminder that Lasinia is now a worker's utopia and the ideal model for a new and greater world. Unfortunately, his speech was cut sort by urgent military business which required his attention.

The State of the War

A regular column discussing the ongoing crisis.

(The Horizon Tribune, 25th Spring's Dusk 4022 HR.) The major development in the war situation in recent days is the belated confirmation that Baron Yuri von Litkinstein was assassinated some months ago. The assassination was, according to Vegdarbarran sources, carried out by a "hellish creature, some daimon or avatar with unnatural powers and evil intent"; it is believed that the news was kept quiet in the hope that a successor could be chosen from the three main candidates - bastard son Karl von Litkinstein, favoured nephew Leonid von Litkinstein, and former ambassador to Horizon Milan Gapon - before the world discovered that Vegdarbarra was leaderless.

Small hope of that. Negotiations between the three leaders broke down completely in the past two months. First, Milan Gapon accused Karl von Litkinstein of being a worshipper of Lacrymosa, and appeared to have discovered proof in the form of a "book of despair" found in Karl's quarters. The accusation seems to have convinced both Leonid von Litkinstein and the Vegdarbarran peasantry, and Karl is believed to be either dead or in hiding following a ruthless purge of those forces loyal to him by Gapon and Leonid's men. Relations between Milan Gapon and Leonid von Litkinstein, meanwhile, have deteriorated to the point where all-out war has been declared, and central Vegdarbarra is now caught up in a brutal civil war.

The Vegdarbarran commanders on the frontline are new in a tenuous position, especially now that Gapon's loyal forces have withdrawn to fight for him against Leonid's armies. With civil war raging in the Vegdarbarran heartland, they now cannot depend upon reinforcements; however, it is widely assumed that if they abandon their positions on the borders of Horizon and Lasinia the Lasinians will seize the opportunity to invade Vegdarbarra. (For Horizon's part, David Wright has ruled out retaliatory action, declaring that he will use the Mayoral Legions solely for the defence of Horizon and humanitarian missions.)

The war has therefore reached an ugly stalemate. The Vegdarbarran frontline commanders are not capable of launching decisive actions against the Horizon and Lasinian forces, but their forces are so entrenched on the border that any effort on the part of Horizon and Lasinia to oust them will lead to massive casualties on both sides. It is believed that the allied nations are divided over the acceptability of this course of action: David Wright is known to oppose it, preferring to take the opportunity to bolster Horizon's defences to the point where a war-weakened Vegdarbarra cannot seriously contemplate assailing them, whilst Lasinian leader Daniel Priestley is said to consider any sacrifice worthwhile if it means the defeat of Vegdarbarra.

In further news from the Vegdarbarran heartland, it is reported that Milan Gapon evaded an assassination attempt last night. While such attempts are more than common among Vegdarbarran nobles, the fact that the assassin got so close and make it definitely worthy of report - especially given the heights of paranoia seen amongst the Vegdarbarran leadership since Baron Yuri's death. Lieutenant Belikov of the Vegdarbarran 7th Regiment is believed to have been the assassin; He is reported to come to Gapon's headquarters at Urtovsk saying he had urgent news that was for Gapon's ears alone. Shortly after that, there was the sound of screaming and gunfire, and - rumour has it - eldritch chanting. Gapon's forces managed to stop the attacker at the cost of several men; Gapon is shaken by the incident and accuses Leonid von Litkinstein of the attack, which Leonid is said to deny.

On the Grapevine

Quickpistol Flip-Flops, Overrules Red Star

Looks like Quickpistol's been feeling the heat from the government over this new Red Star bar. The Lasinians don't like the... uh... connotations it has, what with it winning support from the hardcore anarchist wing of the HPLF, and the new management seem a bit persona non grata too. Still, there was no reason for Quickpistol to just stand aside and let the government walk all over him. If you ask me, the old guy's getting soft.

Dracion Leads Jude's Concern

Well, it does seem a little odd - Betts was always such a robust child but I guess the stress of it all must have got to him at last. Seems to have had a complete meltdown. Good thing Dracion is there to look after things really... Actually, now that you mention it, it is very convienient that he took over so quickly in the Concern... then again, he was Betts' favourite.

Under-Chamber Defies Merchant's Arm, Arm Declared Fair Game

I hear the refusal was unanimous. Then again, the Merchant's Arm are a load of dodgy bastards... Yeah, I know the Under-Chamber is a load of dodgy bastards as well, but that's besides the point. They didn't want any of it even after the Arm petitioned to be let in on the Under-Chamber deal. That's not the end of it though - after that the Arm went off sulking and refused to deal with anyone... at all... they've started pulling all their assets out of Horizon (and I mean ALL) and won't talk to anyone. Let's just say the mobs haven't taken too kindly to this - practically all of them have declared "open season" on Arm assets and people. Anyone associated with the Arm is likely get robbed blind if they don't act soon - and if anyone happens to knife an Arm member or two without doing them the courtesy of Silvering them, the Under-Chamber's liable to look the other way.

Columna vs. Columna: Christopher Beats the WBI

That Chris Columna's been full of himself the last few days. Ryan Columna, who must be his... his... let's say his cousin, found dead with his brains blown out, in the clothes of Bill Kellor, Chris' lieutenant and main link to the Kellors, who is nowhere to be found. All that, and C.C is near to celebrating. "That's one dangerous spy", he claims, "that I'm proud to have gotten rid of." It went like this; Ryan didn't die in that explosion at all. Hurt, yes, but he soon recovered, and took the opportunity to do some deep undercover work. Had the William Kellor (who was, word has it, far too fond of the crap Vegdar-dust) gotten rid of, disguised himself, and infiltrated the Family. Christopher Columna found out soon enough - difficult not to tell when your nearest lieutenant's been replaced - and he's been going crazy the last few months trying to neutralise his cousin and get rid of him without tipping the WBI off. Now's he's succeeded in getting rid of him - apparently getting the dreaded Nightbeast onside in the process. It's a tangled mess those Columna leave, I tell you...

Vegdar-Dust Addicts Rave About New Blend

Whooooa maaan, have you tried this new Vegdar-dust? You see some crazy shit man, I'm telling you. I mean you know when you do like normal Vegdar-dust and feel like you're leaving your body and floating free, well with this new stuff that they like got off the mountains, yeah you know where the Wall used to be, yeah like as I was saying with this stuff you don't just leave your body you go into someone else's, yeah like you where seeing things through their eyes. Yeah I just like got into you know like the mind of a Jurican farmer, it was crazy man like I'm him and then the next moment I was me again.

[OOC: With the Wall becoming a mountain, harvesting Vegdar-dust has become much easier: good Vegdar-dust is now as cheap as a normal drug, whilst bad Vegdar-dust is no longer on the market since it's no longer easier to harvest than the good.]

In the Small Ads

WANTED: NIGHTBEAST

(The Horizon Post, 23rd Spring's Dusk 4022 HR.) 8,000 guilder reward for the capture of the vigilante known as "Nightbeast", dead or alive.

[OOC: An anonymous contact point is given for those interested in this. 8,000 guilders is a Staggering amount of money.]

News Sources

So that you can make a decision on how much to believe each news source, here's some details on the various peridoicals.

The Town Crier

The Town Crier is a dull, dry periodical which publishes official proclamations from the government and the Embassies, notices of births, marriages and deaths amongst the upper classes, transcriptions of debates in the Goodly Chamber, and other such official business. Few people actually read it, although many journalists consult it when they want to find out the official take on a particular issue.

The Horizon Tribune

Super-respectable periodical; never under-researches its facts, never skimps on in-depth analysis, does not report on frivolous issues. Has all the right opinions on politics; supports Colonel Zero broadly, but far from unconditionally. Held up by the great and good as an example of everything that's right about journalism. Lots of people have it on their coffee tables to impress visitors; many, many fewer actually read it. Old numbers are usually popular with the Beggars, too.

The Horizon Times

Owned by Ian Loveday, the Horizon Times is beloved by the upper classes since it can be relied on not to stray too far from opinions they hold themselves. It is something of a mouthpiece for Loveday, although he is careful not to abuse this too much; it can usually be trusted when it isn't talking about its beloved owner, but readers should be careful of its subtle political bias.

The People's Truth

The official newspaper of the Horizon People's Party, a Richterist party running for election in the new, elected Goodly Chamber. It's marketed as an upmarket, respectable periodical, but it's stuffed to the brim with propaganda.

The Horizon Post

Utter rag. The events reported on the first few pages occasionally bear some resemblance to things that actually happened, though with few facts and more "hilarious", or enraged, commentary. After that, the paper's avowed purpose to "bring you the TRUTH on the hidden world of the supernatural" means that the stories tend to come from bored peasants or drunkards paid to talk about their "experiences" with Shamans, Gods, Treacherous Beasties, Fae, the Emperor, whatever. Very occasionally, one of these stories is actually true, although this is more or less coincidence.

The Horizon Illuminator

The Illuminator matches its great rival (the Post) for sensationalism, but specialises in gossip, innuendo, and scandalous allegations as opposed to the supernatural. It is another newspaper owned by Ian Loveday, and is somewhat more blatant about pandering to his views than the Times is.

The Underworld Intelligencer

Another muck-raking scandal sheet, along similar lines to the Horizon Post and the Horizon Illuminator, which has recently become prominant. It is notable mainly for its willingness to name individuals and organisations outright, a step many reporting on Horizon's criminal underground are somewhat unwilling to take (rightly fearing reprisals); as such, while it has the morals and ethics of a gutter newspaper, it is effectively an underground rag, having been driven into secrecy by fear of the mobs rather than by governmental disapproval.

The Liberator

The mouthpiece of the HPLF, the Liberator is subversive, anti-authoritarian, and fashionably dangerous to read. Burn it or pass it on after you've finished with it, and don't let the Watchdogs find it on you. It is also referred to as the "Lirbatore" by spiteful critics of its editorial eccentricities.

Skylarker's Monthly

The newest publication to hit the streets, Skylarker's Monthly is doing a roaring trade amongst the many devotees of the new sport, as well as bookies seeking the latest information on the competitors.

Fitzkarald Monthly

Fitzkarald Monthly is the official in-house publication of the Fitzkarald Opera House and is widely-read in theatrical circles.

The Amateur Natural Philosopher's Periodical

This highbrow magazine is an earnest attempt by University academics to present the latest discoveries in natural philosophy, alchemy, esoterica and so forth in a clear and easily-understoond manner. Their fact-checking is rigorous, to the extent that some stories have been delayed for months whilst the facts are established.

Clockwork Today

A regularly-produced glossy brochure in which the Clockwork Guild promotes its members' talents.

New Alchemist

Must-read material for all alchemists - licenced or otherwise - New Alchemist reports on the cutting edge of alchemical research.

Occult Correspondences

Less interesting than its name implies, this is a dry academic journal devoted to the publication of highly theoretical papers concerning natural philosophy and its related fields.

The People of Lasinia

Published in Horizon, this paper advocates, discusses and attempts to organise a "campaign for social justice" in Lasinia. What exactly this means is somewhat unclear, but would definitely involve the overthrow of the existing social order, possibly in bloody mayhem, and replacing it with something more egalitarian. It also specialises in exposing corruption and incompetence in high places in the Lasinian government (indeed some have said that it must have multiple sources on the inside). Needless to say the People is illegal under pain of imprsonment or worse in Lasinia, and the unofficial spies of Lasinia are forever trying to shut it down.

The Grapevine

Of course, the printed word has no monopoly on truth. Many stories that don't make the newspapers still get the underground buzzing with rumour and speculation. The most widely-circulated speculation is presented here.
