HORIZON IS OVER!

The webpage remains up as a permanent archive of game material, mainly for the benefit of nostalgic players - although if you'd like to run a Horizon-inspired game for your friends, that's wonderful too. Horizon will be succeeded by Legacyin Trinity term of 2006.

If you like you can look at the (sketchy, incomplete) GM notes as well.

The News

Turn 12

This news covers events from the 1st of Summer's Glory, 4022 HR, to the 25th of Summer's Dusk - the day of the Riverview meeting. In each section, stories are sorted in roughly chronological order, although in the case of the Grapevine it's hard to tell precisely when rumours begin, and it's rare that anything appearing in the Pamphlet Gallery is dated.

In the Papers

[OOC: All Liberator articles this turn are printed using the old-fashioned presses they were forced to use after their Greywriters broke down.]

Sternos "Innocent", Law Clarified On Daimons

(The Horizon Tribune, 2nd Summer's Glory 4022 HR.) The government inquiry into the end of the Kraeling war and the destruction of New Horizon delivered its conclusions yesterday afternoon. Among those conclusions was the full exoneration of clockwork citizen Sternos, formally headman of the Ghouls, from the charges of wanton Star-fuelled destruction. Having heard the testimony of Sternos himself, as well as many eyewitnesses and occult advisors, the inquiry concluded that Sternos exercised his legal right to use his Star-given powers in what he believed was a productive fashion. The tragedy that resulted was brought on by the Cold Angel itself, without advice or encouragement (whether implicit or explicit) from Sternos. In addition to having acted in good faith, he therefore cannot be held legally responsible for the tragedy.

It has been indicated to the Tribune that as a result of this verdict, the government is rapidly redrafting the laws controlling the actions of shamen within the city. Under the new laws, to be passed shortly, shamen and sorcerers will be held fully responsible for the actions of any daimons they call or summon. Such revisions will not, however, affect Sternos in the case recently concluded. Nor, it seems, are they likely to do so in future. One of the more sensational incidents of the hearing was Sternos' statement from the witness box that he has parted ways with the Stars...

War Hospital to Become Permanent Institution, Aerial Brigade Launches New Horizon Memorial Fund

(The Horizon Tribune, 4th Summer's Glory 4022 HR.) The Withdrawn Cardinals of the Chruch of the Intercessor made a rare public appearance today to attend the dedication of the Kessereth War Memorial Hospital in the Trade District. The Memorial Hospital, established during the early days of the conflict with Vegdarbarra, is to become a permanent institution - staffed by priests and skilled volunteers - providing free healthcare to the needy.

The Cardinal of Cardinals took time in his speech to praise the veterans of the Aerial Brigade, led by Lt. Roberts, and their New Horizon Memorial Fund. The fund intends to raise money to build a suitable monument to the memory of the thousands of colonists killed by the Cold Angel and the Kraeling hordes; any additional monies will be donated to the del Orto orphanages to support the orphans of New Horizon.

Lasinians Offer Safehouses to Alchemists

(The People's Truth, 6th Summer's Glory 4022 HR.) After the legalisation of shamanism by the Mayor Wright there has been a considerable amount of unease within the city over the esoteric and those which manipulate it, this has lead to threats and attacks on declared shamans but also on alchemists. To assure the safety of these alchemists the Lasinian Army has offered a number of safe houses across the city in which they will receive the care and protection from the Lasinian peacekeeping forces - at least until the Lasinians leave the city.

Heavy Taxation On Legalised Fun

(The Horizon Times, 8th Summer's Glory 4022 HR.) No sooner than narcotics and prostitutes are legalised, they're being taxed. The Mayor has approved heavy levies, drawn up by the Treasury, on narcotics and brothels. It is hoped that these taxes will not only pay for the enforcements of the tight regulations imposed on those industries, but will also pay for other government projects. The Mayor did, however, encourage the Treasury to introduce a lesser tax on narcotics than originally proposed, pointing out that a tax making legal narcotics more expensive than illegal narcotics would lead people to frequent dangerous areas to purchase cheaper, less reliable drugs.

[OOC: The upshot of the tax is that the price of narcotics does not fall this turn, and pimps and drug dealers end up receiving the same income as previously.]

Coup Attempt Exposed By Michael d'Avenant

(The Horizon Tribune, 14th Summer's Glory 4022 HR.) It has reached our attention that a coup attempt by renegade elements within the Mayoral Legions and the aristocracy has been foiled by Michael d'Avenant.

The conspirators, led by recently-demoted Colonel Philip-Smith, had recruited around a hundred troops from the Mayoral Legions and were hoping to acquire sky taxis to take them up to the Hive, where they intended to take the Mayor prisoner and release their demands. However, they were depending on d'Avenant - who had used his position within the nobility to gain their trust - to provide the sky taxis; when he did, he made sure they were filled with government agents, who swiftly took the plotters into custody.

A series of arrests within the Mayoral Legions and the Noble Quarter seem to have captured all the conspirators. One of the ringleaders within the aristocratic ring of the the plot, Elizabeth Dalcrow, was dragged kicking and screaming to the Doghouse by her own family's guards, on the orders of Heptarch Cornelius Dalcrow. "I found out when she asked me to help her escape," Cornelius told the Tribune. "Naturally, it was my civic duty to hand her in, even though she's my own daughter. Her actions were deeply, deeply irresponsible and I condemn them utterly."

Documentation obtained by the investigators apparently outline the conspirators' plans: an extremist, radical program, involving declarations of martial law, restrictions on many aspects of public life, suppression of trade unions and other organisations, and a general exaltation of military and aristocratic values.

The vast amounts of evidence obtained by the investigation - including draft proclamations declaring the coup leaders the new masters of Horizon - would seem to make the trials of the conspirators open-and-shut cases: as of this morning, we have had word that Colonel Philip-Smith and his deputies have pled guilty and gone to the firing squad already, and the rest of the conspirators should be tried and executed by the end of the week. Cornelius Dalcrow is not expected to attend his daughter's trial unless he is called to give evidence.

HUMAN BLOODSPORTS LEGALISED! MAYOR WELCOMES DUKE DEL ORTO BACK TO HORIZON!

(The Horizon Illuminator, 18th Summer's Glory 4022 HR.) In a SHOCK MOVE the BARMY MAYOR has audaciously LEGALISED bloodsports involving human beings - so long as the participants CONSENT to be involved, and have a REASONABLE chance of success.

"Obviously, hunting defenceless human beings is WELL OUT," said the Mayor. "And BLATANTLY FIXED AND UNFAIR fights should be STOPPED. But good old-fashioned prizefights, like it or not, are one of the FEW forms of entertainment that have been EMBRACED by the working classes of Horizon. They INVENTED the prizefights, they IDOLISE the fighters, and through the fights they express their WORKING CLASS CULTURE."

The new law will also legalise the sport of so-called EXTREME SKYLARKING, and as a result the DEL ORTO FAMILY have been welcomed back to Horizon. The Mayor was amongst the first to welcome the EXILED DUKE HOME, and declared that it was a "SCANDAL that the family of ROSIE DEL ORTO, friend to ORPHANS and THE NEEDY, should have been run out of Horizon in disgrace." The Del Ortos will not, it should be noted, be restored to their former Heptarchial glory; the Duke himself has SET OFF into the MOUNTAINS OF DUSK to scout for places to establish a new, legal EXTREME SKYLARKING range.

THE ILLUMINATOR SAYS: WELL DONE, MAYOR WIGHT! There's NOTHING which gets our BLOOD GOING more than seeing TWO GROWN MEN BEATING EACH OTHER TO A PULP! Turn to the back pages for our latest BLOODSPORTS news! We've got an EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW with Todd "THE TERROR" Tavistock, king of the BARE-KNUCKLE BOXING RINGS OF THE SLUMS, and a full report of the latest SWORDFIGHT between arch-duellists THE MASKED CAVELIER and THE CLOAKED KNIGHT!

Home Guard Disbands

(The Horizon Tribune, 3rd Summer's Dusk 4022 HR.) The Home Guard has disbanded, after a conference of its leaders failed to find sufficient reason to maintain the organisation. In a speech to the assembled volunteers of the Home Guard, the Mayor expressed his personal sorrow that "such a powerful symbol of our ability to work together for the good of our nation should cease to be. I had personally hoped that the Home Guard would become a permanent fixture on our streets, but it was not to be; perhaps, though, the community spirit that makes our city what it is will express itself through other avenues."

Major Lower City Figures Declare for Democratic Party

(The Horizon Tribune, 5th Summer's Dusk 4022 HR.) The Democratic Party of Horizon has had a boost to its campaign as three prominent figures of the Lower City have announced that they are to stand for the Goodly Chamber in the DPH's name! Michael d'Avenant had stated that he will be running for a seat, and has been seen campaigning with fellow candidate Clarissa Beaumont - known as "the Dockland Belle" - around the city. Together the pair made quite a sight as the dashing lord and stylish lady standing side by side, and it seems both have made an impression upon the people of Horizon with their dedication to the ideals of the DPH and their wholehearted support for the new system of election. D'Avenant spoke of the need for a "Fair Deal for the Small Man" and how the man on the street who had worked so hard for the freedom of this city deserved what the DPH was offering. He promised to campaign for lower taxation and was keen to see the overturning of the legalisation of human shamanism - an issue which the DPH itself has not yet made a firm policy statement on.

Ms Beaumont, wearing an exquisite Jurican dress, spoke of the ideals of the DPH party and of the need for the shake-up of government, having seen the problems with it from the inside. Her support for the Mayor's plans for the running of the city seemed apparent, and the people really seemed to warm to her as she spoke despite it being her first time in the limelight - her natural charm winning them over as a lady of the people for the people.

Some confusion seems to have arisen over who exactly is running as a DPH candidate, as during one of his speeches Lord d'Avenant urged the voters to support a Mr. Geofry Clearwater in the Slums. Mr Clearwater later turned out to be running against Mr. Christopher Columna... who is also standing for the DPH party. When asked about this, Mr. Columna said "Well, obviously there was some miscommunication somewhere about who exactly the DPH party candidate is in this area. Perhaps Mr. Clearwater would like to consider changing his campaign to run in an area where there is no DPH candidate currently. I'm sure when I next see Lord D'Avenant we will be able to clear up any misconceptions about who exactly is running for the DPH and to show our support for the party rather than any one individual." Mr. Columna later spoke of the need for the new system in place and welcomes the change the Mayor has brought about. He also has espoused the need to reverse the legalisation of human shamanism.

CLOCKWORKER'S SHOP RAIDED BY BEES

(The Horizon Post, 7th Summer's Dusk 4022 HR.) The CLOCKWORK MENACE strikes again. Peter Johnson, 46, is a clockworker in the Craftsman's District; he opened his shop yesterday as he has done every weekday for the last twenty years. As he did so, a CLOCKWORK BEE flew in with him and proceeded to his workbench, picking up a loose cog as it did. He shooed it out as soon as he saw it and continued his work. A few hours latter he herd a tapping, He looked up expecting a customer, but instead saw a hoard of at several hundred of the CLOCKWORK MENACES flying around his windows, hurriedly he locked his door and waited for them to go away, Shortly after that there was a crash as one of them fired what appeared to be an abdominally-mounted one-shot at his window, smashing itself as it did so, but that broke the window providing the bees with an entrance which they then proceeded to make use of swarming into his shop and attacking any and all of his works. Mr Johnson tried to stop the bees but they proceeded to pelt him with things, causing him to flee, when he returned ten minutes latter with Watchdogs every cog, spring, nut, bolt and wire had been stolen and every clockwork contraption both in his shop and his house above that had been torn apart and the dissected by these monsters. In half an hour the life's work of a man was destroyed by MONSTERS which the city has so far completely IGNORED.

President Hareford Assassinated In Theatre!

(The Horizon Times, 9th Summer's Dusk 4022 HR.) President Harold Hareford of the United Freedom State was yesterday assassinated while watching the latest production of "Crown of Steel", the legendary play which sparked the New Theatre movement in Horizon. The shots are believed to have been fired by a disgruntled actor, a Mr John Tyler Hite; Hite was gunned down by the President's bodyguards immediately after the assassination. Under the Constitution of the UFS an acting President must be chosen by random lottery from the national Senate; this measure was established so that there could be no predetermined line of succession, thus discouraging any ideas of promotion-by-assassination. Senator Gabriella Rostefan has duly been chosen to become the acting President.

CITY-WIDE DAY OF PROTEST AGAINST SHAMANISM MARRED BY VIOLENCE

(The Horizon Post, 11th Summer's Dusk 4022 HR.) PROTESTS have broken out across the Slums today as CASA and others concerned about ALCHEMISTS and SHAMEN have taken to the streets to make clear their views. However, VIOLENCE BROKE OUT in the Slums near the Lasinian-sponsored SAFE HOUSE FOR ALCHEMISTS, where windows have been smashed, people believed to be alchemists BEATEN UP and a young couple believed to be LAND SHAMEN have been found DEAD after another mob lynching. Peaceful protests began in the Docks and the Trade District, with Michael d'Avenant's crew of war heroes keeping an eye out for trouble, but thanks to the Church of the Intercessor coming out in support to the cause the protests soon spread across the city.

The Church of the Intercessor has stated that while it OPPOSES the legalisation of Shamanism on MORAL and RELIGIOUS grounds, humanity having been commanded by the Intercessor not to worship any of the Powers, it STRONGLY CONDEMNS the VIOLENCE in the Slums, and indeed local priests were quick to offer MEDICAL AID to those hurt by the angry crowds, and helped SAVE a number of innocents from the LYNCH MOBS.

Cornelius Dalcrow Launches "Prosperity" Movement

(The Horizon Times, 13th Summer's Dusk 4022 HR.) Cornelius Dalcrow today invited members of the public to a garden party in his family mansion in the Upper City to celebrate the launch of the Propserity party, the first major right-wing party to enter the Goodly Chamber election. Addressing the crowd, Lord Dalcrow explained his rationale for establishing the party:

"Whether we in the Upper City like it or not, there is an election coming soon, and it is vital that we make our voice heard in it. Those of us who advocate the traditional ways, who distrust the dangerous economic experiments proposed by our Richterist and, yes, our Democratic opponents, who desire to support and not undermine the work of the Watchdogs, and who want to put the brakes on the Mayor's damaging policies - we are going to need a voice.

"If the new Goodly Chamber is to do any good, it must act as a check on the powers of the Mayor. The Democratic Party, while some of their members do acknowledge the danger in certain of the Mayor's policies - I'm thinking here specifically of Michael d'Avenant and his important work protesting the legalisation of shamanism - was founded primarily to support the Mayor's policies. This is admitted by many of the Party's leadership, this what they exist for. The Horizon People's Party, meanwhile, seem all too keen to take lessons from the disasterous Lasinian experiment. No doubt they'd rename the Chamber the Goodly Soviet if they were to take power. We need a party that is devoted to keeping the Mayor in check, rather than encouraging his most damaging and dangerous policies!

"The fact remains that the two major parties that have emerged so far, while they disagree on many of the social aspects of their policies, espouse an essentially socialist economic philosophy. The Democratic Party have not taken this as far as the Horizon People's Party. The dangerous experiment of nationalisation, and the disaster of Soviet economics - which in Lasinia is only supported by the slave labour of millions - would spell disaster for this fair city.

"What is required is a party of individuals devoted to prosperity. Financial prosperity, in which businesses are free to make money for the city and entrepreneurs are free to make their fortunes without the burden of redistributive taxation dragging them down. Social prosperity, in which our streets are safe for the most vulnerable members of our community and in which the arts, the highest expression of our spirit and a source of inspiration and pleasure for all, can flourish. Spiritual prosperity, in which those forces which would undermine the freedom of mortal life - whether that life be human, ghoul, kraeling or clockwork in nature - are held firmly in check.

"This, therefore, is why I have chosen to call our movement Prosperity, and why I intend to contest the upcoming election."

Answering questions from the press, Lord Dalcrow stated that Prosperity would be seeking to establish a second Chamber - along the lines of the original, unelected Goodly Chamber - to act in an advisory capacity to the elected Chamber. When asked whether Prosperity would espouse the philosophy of monarchism which he himself had backed during the Mayoral election, he responded that "we couldn't possibly consider that until the next Mayoral election, and in the current climate we would hesitate to promote monarchism unless we felt a majority of the people of Horizon supported it."

A surprise guest at the party was Nick Roycey, outspoken leader of Citizens Against Shamanism and Alchemy. Roycey was present to announce an electoral pact between CASA and Prosperity: CASA and Prosperity will not field candidates against one another, and CASA has committed to seeking election only in those wards where there is no real chance of a Prosperity victory. "We both want to get the runaway Mayor under control," said Roycey, "so Dalcrow offered us a deal: Prosperity's going to help us get our agenda through, and we're going to help them push theirs." Roycey's presence at the launch has brought Prosperity a credibility it would otherwise have struggled to attain amongst the poorer citizens of Horizon, and early opinion polls commissioned by the Times suggest that Prosperity could well be a force to be reckoned with.

Mayor Invites Lasinian "Military Advisors" to Consult On Public Order Issues

(The Liberator, 15th Summer's Dusk 4022 HR.) Oh, here we go: the Lasinians have found a way to keep their hand in, although thankfully only a skeleton crew remains behind in the Soviet-occupied barracks.

It seems that the Mayor, disconcerted by the breakdown of public order in the Slums during the city-wide day of protest, has accepted the offer of the Lasinians of a group of "military advisors" to look at the issue of maintaining order in the Slums. Usually, of course, it would be up to the Family to maintain order, but the ill-feeling caused by the Mayor's suicidal legalisation of all forms of shamanism and the elitist attitudes of the alchemical community has led to concerns in government circles that if a riot breaks out that the Family either engineered themselves or cannot control there would be serious risks to the security of the city. The problem of policing in the Slums has long been considered insoluble by the greatest minds of the Watchdogs and the Mayoral Legions; will the Lasinians be able to bring a new approach to the table? Or will the perennial nature of the Slum policing problem provide them with an excuse to remain in Horizon until doomsday?

Virros to Stand for Goodly Chamber

(The Horizon Tribune, 17th Summer's Dusk 4022 HR.) In a perhaps less-than-surprising move the leader of Shoreleave House, Virros, has announced that he will be standing for election in the Goodly Chamber from the Docks as an independent candidate. He has yet to issue a statement of policy, however his widespread popularity throughout the city should see him in good stead with the common man. Virros, of course, has been involved with many city initiatives, including most recently the pushing for a proper election of a headman for the clockwork people. He has also been credited with making the initial moves towards the peace treaty with Vegdarbarra and has offered help and support to New Horizon many times in the past. The Mayor said "Yeah, he's a good chap is Virros," when asked. It is hoped that in the coming months Virros will announce his campaign manifesto, but this paper thinks it is likely to be supported by all. COUNT TITIPHUS: OCEAN SHAMAN? (The Horizon Post, 19th Summer's Dusk 4022 HR.) WACKY socialite COUNT TITIPHUS has always been known for his EXTRAVAGANT parties. But what happens when those parties GO WRONG??? A squad of C.A.S.A. VIGILANTES, acting on an anonymous tip-off, raided his latest only to find that not only were many of the attendants DRESSED IN THE MANNER OF SEA CREATURES, but that amongst the guests were lurking some ACTUAL DAIMONS OF THE OCEAN!!!

C.A.S.A. were QUICK TO ACT, and without hesitation soon STRUNG THE FOUL MONSTERS UP, striking another blow for the FORCES of HUMANITY. C.A.S.A. spokesman Nick Roysey says: "I've had Titphus's parties under suspicion. After all, no member of C.A.S.A. has ever received an invitation to any of them, so it's clear that they're keeping something from us. And now we have proof. The whole thing has clearly been a cover for all kinds of degenerate shamen since the word go."

Crisis at Central Steam, Union to Battle Corrupt Management

(The People's Truth, 23rd Summer's Dusk 4022 HR.) With the demise of the Merchant's Arm, many insiders have observed a newfound - and justified - confidence on the part of the Steam Union. The Merchant's Arm had, after all, been the premier strikebreaking force in the city - without them to oppose the Union, who can stand in their way in their struggle for worker's rights?

It seems that the first test of the Union's newfound power is on the horizon, for the managers of Central Steam - managers who are in the employ of the government, and should strictly speaking be servants of the people - have abruptly decided to cut the wages of the workers at one of Horizon's most vital public services. The distinct drop in deaths from exposure and cold last Winter can be attributed to the success of the Central Steam project, and yet short-sighted, reactionary managers, keen to minimise the cost of labour to maintain their own criminally high wages, have chosen to lower their workers' wages.

The Steam Union has stated that it is "shocked that the workers who last winter heroically provided heat and steam to all Horizon - aside from the Slums, due to unavoidable sabotage - have been betrayed in this manner". The Union is due to vote in the next 48 hours on strike action in sympathy with the disenfranchised employees of Central Steam; meanwhile, the National Treasurer has attempted to broker meetings between the Steam Union and the Central Steam administrators in order to reach a settlement.

The People's Truth urges all Horizon People's Party supporters to back the Steam Union in their struggle, and to provide them with welcome reinforcements should strike action be called for.

Election '22

A regular column discussing the upcoming election.

(The Horizon Tribune, 25th Autumn's Rise 4021 HR.) With four months to go before election day, we at the Tribune are proud to present the results of our first opinion poll.

The poll shows the Democratic Party of Horizon with a surprisingly strong lead - despite the apparent disharmony within the ranks - with strong support in the Slums, the Docks, and the Trade district, and a slight majority in the Craftsman's Quarter. Much of the credit for this has to go to Michael d'Avenant, the aristocrat and war hero, whose involvement has proved that the HPP is more than merely the "support the Mayor" party. The Horizon People's Party has won a predictably strong lead in the Steam, and has a few supporters in the Slums; Prosperity, meanwhile, has met with strong approval in the Upper City and has made inroads into the Ruins and the Craftsman's Quarter.

Amongst the minor parties, Colonies and Countryside has proven strong in the outlying regions, although the Democratic Party has won support in a few villages and towns. The Circular Voice has near-unanimous support for its candidates in the Ghoul community, and CASA has made advances in poorer regions of the Slums, Trade district and Ruins - especially those parts which border the Magic Ghetto. CASA has also won support from the refugee communities within New Horizon.

Based on our poll, if an election were held tomorrow the 700 seats of the new Goodly Chamber would be divided thusly:

351 for the Democratic Party
110 for Prosperity
93 for the Horizon People's Party
84 for Colonies and Countryside
60 for CASA
12 for the Circular Voice

predicting an absolute majority for the Democratic party, albiet a weak one.

However, with the rapid rise of Prosperity, the activities of the Steam Union raising the profile of the Horizon People's Party, and continued concerns about the violent nature of CASA, we anticipate major changes in the poll numbers in the coming four months.

On the Grapevine

D'Avenant to Rule Rats

I hear old d'Avenant's been calling himself Captain of the Rats these days, sprawling in the Captain's Chair and ordering the Concern and Shoreleave about. He's also been refusing Brotherhood membership to his enemies like William the Pig, who oddly disappeared last week...

Under-Chamber Votes Not to Hold Hands and Be Friends

I knew it wouldn't last. Truce is over, all bets are off and you better start watching your back again. The mobs are going back to their old ways now the Vegdarbarran and Kraeling threats aren't any more. I heard the Under-Chamber considered making the Truce permanent... Didn't hold water though and got voted down so I hear... wonder who proposed it - seems kinda dumb to me.

Fairy Dust Addicts Talk of "Hostess"

No honest… I’m not making this up… Well I was taking my usual stuff, the good stuff you know. When I tripped out I started seeing all these lights dancing and the pretty people… like you normally get with fairy dust. Then all of a sudden there’s these people gathered round me offering me a pot of tea and a plate of cakes… I tell you it was the weirdest thing I’ve ever seen… And it was exactly the same the next time and the time after that… So I tell my dealer about it and I’m apparently not the only one… They’re all talking about this “Hostess” woman who appears to people when they’re tripping out and starts offering them refreshments…

Family Treats Working Girls Better - EasyGirl Wins Out Anyway

Well, I guess it makes sense. This EasyGirl schtick of Virros' is easily the best deal the working girls of the Lower City have found for a long time; the Family, by contrast, have been indifferent bosses at best to the women that work for them. They've never exactly approved of prostitution since Emily Kellor took over twenty years ago. So now they're scared of losing what talent they have to EasyGirl, so they're improving conditions - throwing out the worst pimps, rebuilding the bordellos, and so on. They're losing out anyway, of course - Virros is an experienced businessman, and they've got the reputation now. At least things are improving for the girls in the Docks *and* the Slums, with this competition for talent. The only odd thing is, the Family seem to have started improving things for their girls before EasyGirl even got going...

Fivefold Way

So I'm beginning to hear that, what with CASA running around stringing people up, those shamen who want to be able to hold their heads up high - come out of the pentagram, so to speak - are starting to get politically active themselves. The Fivefold Way, they're calling themselves, and they're even toying with the idea of running for the Goodly Chamber. Should be interesting to see CASA's reaction to that...

News Sources

So that you can make a decision on how much to believe each news source, here's some details on the various peridoicals.

The Town Crier

The Town Crier is a dull, dry periodical which publishes official proclamations from the government and the Embassies, notices of births, marriages and deaths amongst the upper classes, transcriptions of debates in the Goodly Chamber, and other such official business. Few people actually read it, although many journalists consult it when they want to find out the official take on a particular issue.

The Horizon Tribune

Super-respectable periodical; never under-researches its facts, never skimps on in-depth analysis, does not report on frivolous issues. Has all the right opinions on politics; supports Colonel Zero broadly, but far from unconditionally. Held up by the great and good as an example of everything that's right about journalism. Lots of people have it on their coffee tables to impress visitors; many, many fewer actually read it. Old numbers are usually popular with the Beggars, too.

The Horizon Times

Owned by Ian Loveday, the Horizon Times is beloved by the upper classes since it can be relied on not to stray too far from opinions they hold themselves. It is something of a mouthpiece for Loveday, although he is careful not to abuse this too much; it can usually be trusted when it isn't talking about its beloved owner, but readers should be careful of its subtle political bias.

The People's Truth

The official newspaper of the Horizon People's Party, a Richterist party running for election in the new, elected Goodly Chamber. It's marketed as an upmarket, respectable periodical, but it's stuffed to the brim with propaganda.

The Horizon Post

Utter rag. The events reported on the first few pages occasionally bear some resemblance to things that actually happened, though with few facts and more "hilarious", or enraged, commentary. After that, the paper's avowed purpose to "bring you the TRUTH on the hidden world of the supernatural" means that the stories tend to come from bored peasants or drunkards paid to talk about their "experiences" with Shamans, Gods, Treacherous Beasties, Fae, the Emperor, whatever. Very occasionally, one of these stories is actually true, although this is more or less coincidence.

The Horizon Illuminator

The Illuminator matches its great rival (the Post) for sensationalism, but specialises in gossip, innuendo, and scandalous allegations as opposed to the supernatural. It is another newspaper owned by Ian Loveday, and is somewhat more blatant about pandering to his views than the Times is.

The Underworld Intelligencer

Another muck-raking scandal sheet, along similar lines to the Horizon Post and the Horizon Illuminator, which has recently become prominant. It is notable mainly for its willingness to name individuals and organisations outright, a step many reporting on Horizon's criminal underground are somewhat unwilling to take (rightly fearing reprisals); as such, while it has the morals and ethics of a gutter newspaper, it is effectively an underground rag, having been driven into secrecy by fear of the mobs rather than by governmental disapproval.

The Liberator

The mouthpiece of the HPLF, the Liberator is subversive, anti-authoritarian, and fashionably dangerous to read. Burn it or pass it on after you've finished with it, and don't let the Watchdogs find it on you. It is also referred to as the "Lirbatore" by spiteful critics of its editorial eccentricities.

Skylarker's Monthly

The newest publication to hit the streets, Skylarker's Monthly is doing a roaring trade amongst the many devotees of the new sport, as well as bookies seeking the latest information on the competitors.

Fitzkarald Monthly

Fitzkarald Monthly is the official in-house publication of the Fitzkarald Opera House and is widely-read in theatrical circles.

The Amateur Natural Philosopher's Periodical

This highbrow magazine is an earnest attempt by University academics to present the latest discoveries in natural philosophy, alchemy, esoterica and so forth in a clear and easily-understoond manner. Their fact-checking is rigorous, to the extent that some stories have been delayed for months whilst the facts are established.

Clockwork Today

A regularly-produced glossy brochure in which the Clockwork Guild promotes its members' talents.

New Alchemist

Must-read material for all alchemists - licenced or otherwise - New Alchemist reports on the cutting edge of alchemical research.

Occult Correspondences

Less interesting than its name implies, this is a dry academic journal devoted to the publication of highly theoretical papers concerning natural philosophy and its related fields.

The People of Lasinia

Published in Horizon, this paper advocates, discusses and attempts to organise a "campaign for social justice" in Lasinia. What exactly this means is somewhat unclear, but would definitely involve the overthrow of the existing social order, possibly in bloody mayhem, and replacing it with something more egalitarian. It also specialises in exposing corruption and incompetence in high places in the Lasinian government (indeed some have said that it must have multiple sources on the inside). Needless to say the People is illegal under pain of imprsonment or worse in Lasinia, and the unofficial spies of Lasinia are forever trying to shut it down.

The Grapevine

Of course, the printed word has no monopoly on truth. Many stories that don't make the newspapers still get the underground buzzing with rumour and speculation. The most widely-circulated speculation is presented here.
