The Court of the Deep Places

The God of a dark and lonely forest. The Court of the Deep Places reside where others do not tread, for fear of loosing themselves or their way back to the rest of the world. Called Wilderness Powers, the Court will often be quite content to immerse themselves in their ancient tasks and let the world go by. They are assumed by many to be slow and sedate, but this is a somewhat erroneous assumption, methodical and mysterious work is not necessarily ponderous, and their inherent solitude often leaves them quick to anger at incursions on their domain. Yet their devotion to the oldest and Deepest gives rise to their desire to see the world be put to rights following the overthrow of the Iron Rule.

The Creator charged the court to protect the untouched and unsoiled, choosing Gods who were sturdy and unshakeable in resolve. To rule such places, the members of the Court become so familiar and devoted to them, they may forget others altogether until their duty is interrupted in some way. Unheeding of reasons to fraternise with others, they to many seem uncommunicative, yet they do their duty and do as they please and few complain. Perhaps because few have met, except by chance, these wild and oft-distracted Gods. They follow the Creator’s rule, indeed, so that their “subjects may have the freedom to exist”, but exactly how the denizens of the Deep Places exist is another matter.

The most base, and possibly most essential working of nature are their burden, or so they might think of their duties, were they not so intensely inspired by their purpose that they consider little else of importance. Little is known of what the Court as a whole did in the beginning, it is entirely possible that most members of the Court were only dimly aware of the others' existence, so devoted are they to their Duty. It is known that, should these Gods become offended, they have many means at their disposal to exact their revenge and foolish mortals who have disturbed them have either quickly learned to stay away or become as affected by the aura and element of the Deep Places as the Court themselves. When the Gods fought the hordes of the Unreal, the rage of the Sea and Storm made the conflict known to mortals and even immortals remember the fury of the Court of Deep Places, labelling them mad and wild.

Such notable actions of the Court are truly old, though distracted, the Court tend to keep themselves to themselves. Indeed many have not been heard of since before the Iron Rule and it is thought that perhaps some of the Court may be so removed as to be unaware of that troubled time, their deep seated aberration often occluding such matters. Still, perhaps they remain aloof because few desire to ask what goes on in the nooks and crannies that hold the last stations of the truly old world. And perhaps it is appropriate that those who are already affected in some way are the ones who do the asking.

The Court’s structure is relatively undefined, holding an estate is usually enough, anything further is determined as the need to know arises. Being independent if not entirely solitary, the Court do not frequently gather, and then, it is debatable how many are there or how many decline attendance. An annual festivity is held at the blackest depths of the sea, in the shadow of a great and dormant volcano which, legend has it, will erupt with a force that will rock the heavens, should the entire Court ever be called together there.

At social events, the fashion is for members of the Deep Places to wear masks or facepaint with animalistic, savage, or otherwise nature-oriented features.
